Supporting the Needs of Breastfeeding Students on a Catholic University Campus An Innovative Approach

Main Article Content

Abstract

New mothers returning to academic studies face many barriers. One of these barriers — the continuation of breastfeeding — can be particularly challenging. Breastfeeding is integral to the health of both mother and infant, underscoring several important tenants of the Catholic ethos; however, the literature indicates a significant number of university campuses lack appropriate space for breastfeeding mothers and have no specific policies or support in place for mothers who are trying to meet their breastfeeding goals. This article describes an innovative approach by the University of Detroit Mercy in creating a lactation support space for students, staff, faculty, and guests. We present steps taken in developing the support program, challenges faced during the process, and recommendations based on lessons learned.
